a Dream Academy discography

Compiled by Brent Aliverti
Last updated 08 February 2005

Many thanks to The Dream Academy fans throughout the world that have helped me compile this discography. It's probably still missing the odd item here and there, but I think all significant releases by the group are contained here, and I have provided short samples of some of the more difficult to find rarities.

I've done my best to provide information on what each of the members was up to prior to The Dream Academy, and what each has been doing since. Nick has mentioned quite recently that he wouldn't mind getting back together some day and making some more music.

For those of you interested in Dream Academy rarities, I have provided some summaries right off the bat, so you can see what non-album material is floating around out there.

Before, we get started though, I need to answer one FAQ that I have been getting a lot of lately:

Q: Who does that remix of Life in a Northern Town and where can I get it?
A: That remix...the one that is prominently featured in a contact lens commercial...is by Dario G and is called "Sunchyme". It has been released around the world as a CD single and is also available on his album "Sunmachine".

| === LATEST NEWS === |

8.FEB.05 :Gilbert Gabriel has a new album due soon called "The Believers: Angels & Fools" The sound is reportedly more organic (as opposed to dancey) and features contributions from former Dream Academy cohorts Kate and Nick on a few tracks, making this something of a reunion! More information and a sample of the track Serotonin Sky is available at the Burning Candle website. Track listing:

  Evangeline (Gilbert Gabriel/Andrew Fryer/Jenny Cruse)
Serotonin Sky (Gilbert Gabriel/Ally Kennen/Andrew Fryer)
Life in a Northern Town (Gabriel/Laird-Clowes)
  England's Dreaming (Gabriel)
Shooting at the Moon (Gabrile/Fryer/Ollie Childs)
  Northern Sky (Nick Drake)
  Tubeface (Ollie Childs)
  Time (Gabriel/Fryer)
Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want (Morrisey/Marr)
  Angels & Fools (Gabriel/Fryer)

21.APR.04 : Mordechai Vanunu walked out of prison a free man today, though he still has numerous restrictions on where he can go and what he can say. Vanunu's story was told in song form on b-side of Love, the first single from The Dream Academy's third album. See Who are Those People? for more information.

15.APR.02 : Gilbert Gabriel's project Futurasound will play their 1st performance on Saturday 20th April at Toxic 8, Guildhall Chambers, 1-6 Corn Exchange Street, Cambridge. Two performances, one at 10pm and another at midnight.

05.MAR.02 : Chris Hammond has checked in with Gilbert Gabriel again, asking him about his current release "Reminiscence" and other assorted life's questions. Check it out in the Feburary 2002 Interview with Gilbert Gabriel. Also check the Articles section for past interviews.

13.FEB.02 : More info on one of the recent gigs for Nick. He opened for a David Gilmour show in London a few weeks go...the same show that featured personal favorite Kate Bush providing guest vocals on "Comfortably Numb". As usual, if anyone happens to know what Trashmonk's set list was, please let me know.

The other day, I took a stab at doing an instrumental mix of Power To Believe, similar to what can be heard in the film Planes, Trains & Automobiles. The mix is posted in the Files area of the Dream Academy list on YahooGroups..

07.FEB.02 : A few news items of interest. Kate St. John recently played two dates with husband Sid Griffin in Paris. Apologies for not getting that news up sooner. Also, Nick Laird-Clowes reportedly played some shows around London recently. I never received any word from Poptones or Nick (never have, in fact) or I would have mentioned it prior to the gigs. If anyone attended and remembers what songs were performed, please let me know.

Gilbert's new single "Reminiscence" has almost sold out of it's first run and has received licensing interest from DJ compilation CDs. You can hear a clip of the single at Gilbert's Futura site. The single is distributed through Unique Records (UK) and Distribution (UK) who in turn are supplying WATTS (US). A video for the single is near completion and may be available on this site in the future.

14.NOV.01 : I digitized some rare Dream Academy promo videos and am providing them on my site as streaming RealMedia files. Initial clips are Life In A Northern Town (original UK version), Indian Summer, and Love. They should be watchable over a modem, but quality is a bit low due to streaming modem bitrate and original source limitations. Still, they should give you a good idea of what the videos are like.

Gilbert Gabriel is due to release his new single "Reminiscence" very soon. More details as they become available.

04.SEPT.01 : I finally got around to updating the quality of the sound samples. The fidelity is quite a bit better now, plus they are in stereo and are now streaming. In some cases the samples are longer, and I've added samples for The Love Parade (instrumental), In Suspendium, Test Tape No. 3, and Mordechai Vanunu. I still need to update The Act and Alfalpha samples.

30.AUG.01 : I've been late in mentioning the existence of a Dream Academy mailing list at YahooGroups. You can hop over to the home page to subscribe, or send an email to dream-academy-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. Not too much discussion so far, but once critical mass is achieved, I'm sure things will pick up.

23.AUG.01 : In anticipation of Poptone's reissue of "Mona Lisa Overdriven", Crud Magazine is running a Trashmonk contest. Five winners will receive a copy of the new album and a Poptones sampler.

24.JUL.01 : Not much to report. Rumours abound that Poptones will reissue Trashmonk's debut as "Mona Lisa Overdriven" featuring a reworked tracklist and in some cases remixed tracks. A single release of "Sapphire" is tentatively scheduled for Sept 10, 2001.

24.DEC.00 : Happy holidays all! Just a couple Trashmonk notes for you. Trashmonk has written some comments on our presidential election debacle. Check it out on the Poptones site. Also, a trailer is available for the movie "Invisible Circus" which Trashmonk did the music for.

5.SEPT.00 : The latest issue of Lexicon Magazine features an interview with Gilbert Gabriel. In addition, Lexicon reports that Nick Laird-Clowes is set to release a new Trashmonk album on Alan McGee's Poptones label, but no news on when that will happen.

29.APR.00 : Futura's first single "Call My Name" has been officially released in both 12" format and as a CD single. Both are available from Juno Records (UK) and the import CD5 should soon be available from Siren CD in the US.

In conjunction with the official release, Chris Hammond and myself asked Gilbert a number of questions regarding Futura. Check out the latest Q&A with Gilbert Gabriel of Futura.

26.MAR.00 : You may know that Nick contributed background vocals to the final T-Rex album "Dandy in the Underworld". What you may not know is that T-Rex lead singer Marc Bolan had a short-run UK show in 1977 called "Marc", in which he played some of his own music as well as introduced new acts. I believe there were only six shows produced before Marc tragically died in a car crash in September 1977. Recently, UK satellite station Granada Plus has been showing the original "Marc" shows. Philip Charlton just e-mailed me to let me know that Alfalpha appeared on one of those shows. Although Philip was unsure of what song they played, he did say they got the approval of Marc himself. If anyone happens to see this again, and can tell me what song they played, please let me know. Also, if you can tape it and get a screen-shot or two, so much the better. Thanks Philip!

15.MAR.00 : I've made some updates to this page including several clickable images in the discography section. I've also changed some of the code behind the scenes, using cascading style sheets (CSS) for some things, including positioning. One caveat is that different browsers implement support for CSS in different ways. I have optimized the layout for Windows machines running IE 4.0 or higher. If you are running a different config and things look completely haywire, please drop me some mail and let me know and I'll see if there is anything I can do.

14.MAR.00 : Futura's "Call My Name" is currently #23 on DotMusic's UK Club chart, up from 31 last week and 39 the week before that. Congratulations to Gilbert and co. Let's see how far it can go!

I'm hoping this is okay with Gilbert...I'm still awaiting a reply on it, but I have created 1:45 second sample of "Call My Name" taken from the 12" DJ mix. Have a listen and see what you think. Call My Name sample (56 kbps mono, 714KB)

18.FEB.00 : In just over one month, Gilbert Gabriel's new project Futura will officially release their debut "Call My Name". A 12" version of the track has already been pressed and should be released to clubs soon. Former Dream Academy manager (and John Hughes' music director) Tarquin Gotch is on board for U.S. representation.

Visit the official Futura site for complete info, including an enthusiastic press release. Can't wait to hear this track, based on the description!

26.NOV.99 : According to recent reports, Alan McGee, head of Creation Records, will be leaving that label next year in June 2000. As many of you know, Alan was instrumental in getting Nick/Trashmonk signed to Creation and was Nick's biggest supporter at the label. What, if any, effect Alan's departure from Creation will have on Trashmonk is unknown at this point. More news as I hear it.

18.NOV.99 : Pavel Dvorak sent me the full tracklisting of the recently released Japanese best-of CD entitled Somewhere in the Sun - The Best of the Dream Academy. See album section for full tracklisting. This marks the first appearance on CD for Life In A Northern Town (Extended version) and The Party (Acoustic Version).

06.OCT.99 : Chris Hammond just filed an interview with Gilbert Gabriel, founder of The Dream Academy. Check it out to find out what Gilbert has been up to, his thoughts on The Dream Academy, and more. Thanks Chris!.

09.SEPT.99 : German music site Lametta just posted a new interview with Trashmonk (aka NLC). A very good read. Among the interesting tidbits is that Nick has been asked to do the entire soundtrack for a new Cameron Diaz movie filming in Paris.

14.AUG.99 : I created an Articles section and added three newspaper articles from 1986. Might need some proofreading :)

07.JUL.99 : Some news on Gilbert Gabriel...he has a new ambient/relaxational album out called "Lotus". This is a seperate release from his other project "Lightwave". More information on the Lotus release can be found at the Burning Candle website. Lightwave is due out very soon as well. No sound samples as yet, but if I find some, I'll put them on the web.

Previous news has been archived here.

I also have sampled some Dream Academy rarities for your listening pleasure, including the scarce "Things We Said Today" Beatles cover and "In The Heart", an earlier version of "Lowlands" with alternate lyrics. All of these are out-of-print, so hopefully the record co. won't mind me making these short samples available. They are streaming RealMedia samples.

John Hughes' music director, Tarquin Gotch, was also manager for The Dream Academy for their first two albums. This would likely explain why the band's music appears in these films: FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF (soundtrack never released) Instrumental version of Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want can be heard in the museum scene. Later, when Ferris drops off Sloane, they kiss and Slone says words to the effect "He's going to marry me" and The Edge of Forever begins to play. PLANES TRAINS AND AUTOMOBILES (MCA MCAD 6223, 1987) An instrumental version of "Power To Believe" appears twice during the movie - once while Steve Martin is on the Amtrak train and again while he's taking the "L" home after leaving John Candy at the downtown "L" station. I think "Humdrum" was also in there. Tracklisting for CD (now out-of-print): TOWN (side one) I Can Take Anything (Love Theme) - ETA/Steve Martin, John Candy Ba-na-na-bam-boo - Westworld I'll Show You Something Special - Balaam and the Angel Modigliani (Lost in Your Eyes) - Book of Love Power To Believe (vocal version) - The Dream Academy COUNTRY (side two) Six Days on the Road - Steve Earle & The Dukes Gonna Move - Dave Edmonds Back In Baby's Arms - Emmylou Harris Red River Rock - Silicon Teens Wheels - Stars of Heaven

| === WHO ARE THOSE PEOPLE? === |

A few songs by The Dream Academy are named after, or dedicated to, real people. In an attempt to satisfy my own curiosity, I searched the web and the local library. Here is what I found: GIRL IN A MILLION (song for Edie Sedgwick) (RealMedia sample) Edie Sedgwick was a minor underground icon of the 60's. Born into a wealthy aristocratic New England family, she left home in her early twenties, bound for New York. There she met Andy Warhol and subsequently became one of his "superstar" proteges. She appeared in a few of Warhol's films, including "Poor Little Rich Girl". She died before she was 30 of drug-related causes. Edie was older cousin to actress Kyra Sedgwick. IN EXILE (for Rodrigo Rojas) Most likely, this song is dedicated to Rodrigo Rojas Denegri who died on 2 July 1986. He and Carmen Gloria Quintana were participating in a protest demonstration in Chile when ex-Army officer, Pedro Fernánez Dittus poured petrol on them and set them on fire. Rodrigo Rojas Denegri died of his injuries and Carmen Gloria Quintana was badly scarred. On 6 December 1995 the Supreme Court confirmed a 600-day prison sentence for Pedro Fernánez Dittus for the death and injuries he caused that day. MORDECHAI VANUNU (RealMedia sample) Mordechai Vanunu is an Israeli nuclear technician who in 1986 courageously exposed Israel's extensive nuclear weapons program to the press in England. Just prior to publication of his photographs and testimony, Israeli undercover agents kidnapped him and took him back to Israel. In a secret trial in 1988, the Israeli government convicted Vanunu of treason and espionage and sentenced him to 18 years in prison. He has served 15 years--the majority of it in solitary confinement. The song lyrics do a very good job of communicating Vanunu's story. For more info, see US Campaign to Free Mordechaie Vanunu.
