return to A Dream Academy Discography

In 1988, a Dream Academy single was released in Japan called "In The Heart". The song had a sparse production and a rhythm reminiscent of a folk chant. In 1991, DA released their final album "A Different Kind of Weather", which contained the song "Lowlands". This song was musically very similar to "In the Heart", but had a richer production and completely different lyrics. Below, are the lyrics to both songs, allowing you to compare and contrast them easily. I also have a streaming RealMedia sample of In the Heart. Many thanks to Marco Matarazzo for providing the lyrics.

In the Heart (3.12)
(William Alexander)

The farmer works the fields by day
With power from his hands
And power from the sky above
Brings harvest to the land
The force that's in the earth
Can take the seeds and make them strong
And magnify the power in the song

Hey-ya-ya, in the heartland
Hey-ya-ya, in the heart, in the heart

The light that broke the morning sky
Unlocked the gates of dawn
Was forced to wait around
Til all the curtains had been drawn,
While out amidst the open fields
Another life is born,
And somewhere in another world,
Another life goes on

Hey-ya-ya, in the heartland
Hey-ya-ya, in the heart, in the heartland
Hey-ya-heh-ya, in the open fields

Hey-ya-ya, in the city streets
In the heart, in the heart.
Lowlands (3:45)

The low pressure band had broken up
But not let go
As holy stormy Monday broke out
On the streets below
If not to hear your voice
Is still the thing I can't replace
Somehow I can always see your face

Hey-ya, in the lowlands
Hey-ya-ya

I rise up in the evening
And rebuild a heart of stone
All around the border
Where your memories have grown
Til someone told me don't you know
There is no hiding place
Not until you meet it face to face

Hey-ya, in the lowlands
Hey-ya-ya, on the battlefield
Hey-ya, in the lowlands
Hey-ya-ya, the lowlands

Hey-ya, in the lowlands
Hey-ya-ya, in the rain on the street
Hey-ya, in all of the places where we used to meet

I can see a big bright continent
Where fear does not exist
Where you could walk away from me
And I would not resist
And I won't be coming back again
To see where we went wrong
Never more to hear
Your siren song

And you learn how to find your hiding place
Not until you need it
Face to face to face
In the lowlands
